What are yes/no questions?

Yes/No questions are those questions that can elicit a response in the form of either a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’. They are also known as closed- end questions.

How to frame Yes/No questions

A. If the statements contain an auxiliary verb: ( Bring the auxiliary before the subject)

      1. She is writing a letter.

      Is she writing a letter?

      2. Arun is a doctor

      Is Arun a doctor?

      3. Anitha has finished her project work.

      Has Anitha finished her project work?

      4. The students have submitted their assignment.

      Have the students submitted their assignment?

 

 

B. If the auxiliary verbs have/ has are used as main verbs

      1. He has a car.

      Does he have a car?

      2. He had a car

      Did he have a car?

      3. I have a car

      Do I have a car?

      4. She has three children

      Does she have three children?

C .If the statement contains modal auxiliary verbs: (bring the modal auxiliary before the subject)

      1. They will return the books in three days.

      Will they return the books in three days?

      2. He can swim for a long time.

      Can he swim for a long time?

D. When there is no auxiliary verb in the statementL insert a suitable auxiliary, such as do, did, does)

      1. Anitha bought a ticket.( The verb is in past tense. So insert ‘did’)

      Did Anita buy a ticket?

      2. Arun exercises every day ( The verb is present( singular). So insert ‘does’)

      Does Arun exercise every day?

      3. They like each other( the verb is plural. So insert ‘Do’

      Do they like each other?

      2. He is sleeping.

      Is he sleeping?

      3. He is watching a film

      Is he watching a film?

      4. He has finished his work

Has he finished his work?

      5. He has a car.

      Does he have a car?

      6. She has two children

      Does she have two Children?

      7. I/we/you/they have a diary

      Do I/we/you/they have a diary?

      8. We have wheat flour

      Do you have wheat flour?

      9. She is cleaning the room now.

      Is she cleaning the room now?

      10. She cleans the room every day

      Does she clean the room every day?

      11. She cleaned the room yesterday.

      Did she clean the room yesterday?

Exercise 1

      Transform the following sentences into yes/no questions

      1. She teaches English

      2. They like playing foot ball

      3. We opened the door

      4.He goes for swimming  every morning

      5.I am growing old

Exercise 2

Change the following into Yes/No questions by inserting suitable forms of the verb ‘do’

      1. Arun  exercises every day

      2.Anitha won the match.

      3. They like each other

      4. He goes for swimming every day.

      5. He paid his examination fee.

Common errors

Correct the following sentences:

      1. Is you an IT student? ( yes/ no question)

      2. Let we speak English

3. What we do now? ( wh question)
