CONDITIONALS- REVISION/ ASSIGNMENT
1. REVISION
TYPE

IF CLAUSE
MAIN CLAUSE
FIRST CONDITIONAL
TENSE
SIMPLE PRESENT
WILL + BASE VERB
example
If you play well,
You will win the match
SECOND CONDITIONAL
TENSE
SIMPLE PAST
WOULD + BASE VERB
example
If you played well,
You would win the match
THIRD CONDITIONAL
TENSE
PAST PERFECT
WOULD HAVE+PAST PARTICIPLE
example
If you had played well,
You would have won the match
ZERO CONDITIONAL
TENSE
SIMPLE PRESENT
SIMPLE PRESENT
example
If you heat ice,
It melts

Examples:
Complete the following conditional sentences:
a) If only he had attended the interview,  ………………………………………………….
Here, if clause is given. Note the tense form of the’ if clause’.( had attended= past perfect.)
Therefore it belongs to the third conditional.
Now look at the corresponding main clause in the above table (would have+ past participle)
Therefore the sample answer will be:
. If only he had attended the interview, he would have got the job  (OR).
If only he had attended the interview, he would have secured the job.(or)
If only he had attended the interview, he would have proved his skills.

b) …………………………………………………. You will get good marks in the examination.
Here, instead of if clause, as in the previous example, main clause is given. If clause is missing.
Note the tense form of the main clause.(will get= will + base verb)
Therefore it belongs to the FIRST CONDITIONAL.
Look at the tense form of the corresponding if clause in the above table
You can notice that it is simple present.
Therefore the sample answer will be:
1. If you study well, you will get good marks in your examination.
2. If you work hard, you will get good marks in your examination.
3. If you prepare well, you will get good marks in your examination
4. If you write the correct answers, you will get good marks in your examination

c ) If I knew her name, ……………………………..
Here if clause is given. You have to complete the main clause;
The tense form of the ‘if clause’ is past (knew). Therefore it belongs to the second conditional
The corresponding tense form of the main clause in the second conditional is, would+ base verb
Therefore the possible answer could be:
If I knew her name, I would tell you.
If I knew her name, I would intimate you.
If I knew her name, I  would   inform you.

d) What would you do   if ………………………………………..?
Here main clause is given. ‘If clause ‘ is missing.
Look at the tense from of the main clause (would  do= would + base verb.)
Therefore it belongs to the second conditional.
Now observe the tense form of the corresponding if clause from the above table.
You will notice that it is simple past.
So, the possible answers might be:
1. What would you do if you lost your job?
2. What would you do if you failed in the exam?
3. What would you do if you saw a tiger in your bed room?
4. What would you do if your girl friend refused your proposal?

e) If you heat ice,  ………………………………….
Here if clause is given. You are asked to complete the main clause.
Look at the tense form of the “If clause” (heat= simple present.)
Therefore the sentence may either belong to first conditional or zero conditional.
What happens when you hear ice? Doesn’t it melt? Is it not a scientific fact?
Therefore we consider this sentence as belonging to zero conditional.
And so the possible answer might be:
If you heat ice, it melts
